Do you guys know where I can get a decent vocabulary software to exercise all of the new words that this book is throwing at me? I can't believe the extent to which they are trying to immerse the student in difficult vocab. I'm really turned on by the experience, but I'd like to have some way to handle it without just spreading through lists. Maybe I'll also stop by Kravitz to see if they have some small cards that I can use for vocab. I used to have some vocab cards designed for the psychometric exams, but I have no idea where I put them. In fact, I'll go look for them before I go to Kravitz, but a decent program is a good idea.
Thanks!

I use Byki to learn the vocab list quick and then use Anki to revise. The best way to learn them is to apply the vocab towards the grammar which I assume you are learning alongside the vocab lists. Don't obsess over the vocab at the start, you'll surely forget a bunch of words, so just use them as guides to understand the syntax, idioms, noun declensions etc. You'll find that the more you read, the less you have to go back and find the definition.
ReplyDeleteHello Jason,
ReplyDeleteI have been reading your blog and your enthusiasm to learn Greek. Hey, its a journey that takes commitment and dedication which I believe you have. But you should remind yourself that most of these books on learning Greek are designed for the classroom upon which the teacher is quizzing the students and pushing them to read Greek while he/she suppliments these chapters with actual reading assignments. Self taught people like us just have to do the best we can to learn with what we got. I agree with Adya-Yoni that you should not obsess over the vocabulary. You might burn out if you try to remember them all. Write a silly story with the vocabulary from each chapter and post it in Textkit. I believe that to be one great way to internalize the words. Markos will love to read it and he will respond in kind and with humor.

Nate and I were doing something similar with the vocab in Athenaze a while back, writing up short sentences to illustrate the meaning. That might not be a bad idea at all. Thanks a lot, Michael and Adya-Yoni! :)
ReplyDeleteI downloaded Byki to test it out, and apparently you have to upgrade to the pay version in order to create and/or edit word lists. With a $20 discount, they want $50 to upgrade. I'm not going to go that route just to learn Greek vocab. I pay enough for the books that I keep ordering! :)
ReplyDeleteIs it worthwhile just to run with Anki? I've got the program, but I never really got into it. Not sure about how to use it effectively. I wish I could play with it without it recording my mistakes (willed or not).
I've got the first chapter's (unit 2) vocab entered into Anki, if anyone wants it.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to receive one, Jay.
ReplyDeleteHope you got my email. I continued to translate
the lines, but I'm not so sure about parts of
my initial translation. See you later!
Hope the file is interesting. I'll try to put together the second deck for unit 3 tomorrow -- if I can find the time. :)
ReplyDeleteBy way of update, I found the vocabulary cards that I had mentioned. I think I'll make up a few of those to carry with me. :)
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed and profited from using VocabWorks

It's free, provides for multiple test types, and allows you to enter any vocabulary sets you want.
